Kahu Huruhuru – Mārēna Wedding Design
Size: 1050W × 220H mm, excluding cords.
These modern kahu huruhuru are a beautiful option for weddings, special occasions and evening wear.
Although commonly referred to as korowai, these are more accurately described as modern kahu huruhuru. They are made using machine-stitched feathers on a lined fabric base, rather than traditional handwoven techniques.
Made in Auckland, the kahu huruhuru feature feathers that wrap around the front edge for a finished look. Farmed chicken and rooster feathers are used, with some dyed to create a variety of colours. Drawstring ties allow the width to be adjusted to suit the wearer.
The tāniko trim is woven from wool in Aotearoa New Zealand. This is the Mārēna design, also known as the wedding design. The triangles represent people, with the bride and groom in the centre of the “V” and the minister standing before them. The outer sides of the “V” represent whānau witnessing the ceremony, while the gold thread reflects the significance of the occasion.
