Kahu Huruhuru – Universal Pātiki Design

These modern kahu huruhuru are a beautiful option for weddings, special occasions and evening wear.

Although commonly referred to as korowai, these are more accurately described as modern kahu huruhuru. They are made using machine-stitched feathers on a lined fabric base, rather than traditional handwoven techniques.

Made in Auckland, the kahu huruhuru feature feathers that wrap around the front edge for a finished look. Farmed chicken and rooster feathers are used, with some dyed to create a variety of colours. Drawstring ties allow the width to be adjusted to suit the wearer.

The tāniko trim is woven from wool in Aotearoa New Zealand. This design is known as the Universal Pātiki, or flounder design. The diamond-shaped pattern represents the pātiki (flounder), traditionally associated with good fortune and the provision of food for the iwi. In a contemporary context, it also represents employment, sustenance and the ability to provide for whānau.
