Parāoa also known as Whale Bone has been used by Māori artists as a special medium. Whales hold great significance as a taonga species, representing abundance and wealth. In some tribes, they are believed to be descendants of Tangaroa, the god of the ocean. When a whale becomes stranded, it is seen as a gift from Tangaroa and carving it is a way of showing gratitude. To the Māori, whales are both sacred and symbols of personal transformation and spiritual development.
